Website Evaluation Treasure Hunt

Introduction

In today's world, it is important to evaluate sources of information to determine if the information is real or "fake".  We are bombarded with information 24/7 because of the constant access to our phones and computers.  One of the major sources of information we have is the internet.  A real-world skill that is essential to being a responsible digital citizen is being able to evaluate websites for credibility.  This activity will give you a chance to practice that skill.

Your Tasks

1.  Watch the CRAAP method video and look over the CRAAP handout.

2.  With a partner complete the website evaluation questions for a minimum of 6 websites.  Each partner must evaluate 3 separate websites.

3.  Search each website to find the information to complete the CRAAP handout.

4.  When you have completed your evaluation of the 6 websites, please proceed to the Talk It Over section.

5.  Each student will write a narrative justification as to why he or she would or would not use the website for a research paper.

CRAAP Method

As you consider whether or not an online source you are reading is credible, use the CRAAP method to help you. There is a handout below that you can print and use to evaluate websites using the CRAAP method.

Watch this video to help you understand how CRAAP can help you evaluate websites.

Clues (Websites)

Talk It Over

Now that you have evaluated 3 different websites please discuss with your partner what you have discovered about evaluating websites.  What makes each website credible or not?  How easy was it to use the CRAAP handout? How can you use this skill in everyday life?

Justification

Look at the narrative assignment (Click on the link.) section of this handout.  You will only use the last page of the handout. Begin to outline how you will justify why you will or will not use a website for a research paper.  This justification must include a thesis statement with evidence from the website to support your answer.
